A Good Place to Be From: Images of the Rural South

January 8th, 2013

In a crazy random happenstance, I’m in a 2 person exhibition at North Florida Community College starting on Friday. Very exciting and I’ll be taking my Intro to Photography students over to see it. :-)

Speaking of exciting, I’ve been invited to speak at the Auburn University at Montgomery Southern Studies Conference.  My section is titled Photographers on Imaging the South and chaired by Keri Watson of AUM. I’ll be presenting my artwork with fellow artists Raymond Smith, Chuck Hemard, and Will Fenn on Friday, Feb 8 2:45-4:15. Thrilled to be a part of this (and would love to see your face there!).

But I know why you’re really here. Scroll down to see my first works of 2013. Share your thoughts in the comment section.

North Florida

October 4th, 2012

For nearly as long as I can remember, my work has been closely tied to my driving habits. You drive the same route every day and then suddenly you notice something a little different right off the road. On top of that, I’ve been documenting, almost exclusively, south Georgia where I live. But, for the last nearly 3 years, I’ve been commuting into north Florida’s Jefferson & Madison counties for work. I noticed these two spots on my drive home.

I know that I’m finally in Florida when I see this abandoned building.

I spotted this sign on a recent drive to Florida. No more lazy days for me – I start a new job Monday.

I found this small piece while cleaning my closet this weekend. It’s only 4×4 inches. A heat transfer onto painted wood. The image comes from our family photos.

The French Quarter in New Orleans

I’ve been revisiting some images from the time I spent in New Orleans last year. I’m missing the city. And Savannah. Even though they’re almost worlds apart.

It may be time for a road trip. I’ve been feeling the itch even more since I bought the new camera. Plus my Brownies are sadly collecting dust. They miss the light.
